Activism and Volunteering in London

Hi everyone!
I hope your summer has been fantastic! I'm moving to London in Fall and I will be in the Borough of Southwark area. Thanks to your help in a previous post, I am prepared for grocery shopping in London, but I have some new vegan concerns I was hoping to get some insights on :)

What organizations/places/events/etc. do you recommend for volunteering and participating in around the London area? I searched for animal sanctuaries around London and there were very few.

Does anyone have experience with certain animal rights or animal care-taking organizations or facilities that you would recommend being part of? (Shelters are fine too, though I'd prefer volunteering at no-kills.)

I really want to make a difference for animals in this world no matter where I am, and I'm sure London has to have the opportunities to do that, I just need to find them :)

Thanks so much!

Nando's rolls now contain milk

I know not all vegans would patronise Nando's because they sell chicken, but I wanted to share that I've found out that their rolls now contain milk, so even their veggie burger which was vegan if you asked for no mayo is now not. I've emailed them to let them know how disappointed I am - my husband and I go there often. Not any more!

Trip to Belfast

Hi!

The options on Happy Cow are scarce, and the only post here that I could see for Belfast is about 8 years old, so I would check to see if anyone has some updated info. I'm heading over for the Easter weekend, and after living in London for six months, I'm not sure that I'll be able to find anything much for breakfast. My friend that I'm staying with doesn't have much in the way of kitchen things, so eating out is going to be the best choice I think.

Any recommendations?

Pressed powder?

Can anyone recommend a pressed powder for reducing shine? I don't wear any make-up at all so am a bit lost!

Amsterdam

My husband and I are taking the ferry to Amsterdam at the end of the month, where we will have just a few hours to spend before travelling back home.

Where would you recommend we go to eat, and for general shopping?

Christmas Meal Ideas

Super-duper last minute, but can I get some help with some meal ideas for Christmas? I have a friend coming over, and he's not very open to vegan food, so I'm looking for something that won't frighten him too much, but will show him how amazing vegan food is. I also don't have much money, and only have tomorrow until about 4 pm to do any shopping that needs done. I live in Camden, so I have a pretty wide variety of food shops to choose from.

thanks!

Butter Flavoring and Poppy Seeds and Vegan Shoes

Hi all! You've been so much help to me, and I'm back with more questions. (Thanksgiving went fantastically - thank you all for your help and suggestions, I'll post some pics soon!) A family tradition of mine is to make almond poppyseed bread for Christmas. Now, I haven't looked at all for poppyseeds, so maybe they're just in a regular store with all the other spices and what-not, but butter flavouring I'm at a loss for. In the US, it's in the section with almond flavouring and vanilla and all of those, but I haven't really seen in here, and I can't find somewhere online to sell it, although I'm still not sure on the best online vegan markets out here.

Oh, and how do you tell if shoes are vegan out here? I'm used to having a label on shoes that tells me if everything is hand-made, or if the upper is made of leather, but shoes out here don't seem to have that. What is the easiest way to buy shoes out here? I could use some tennis shoes and some cute boots that aren't crazy expensive (also difficult to find in the states . . .).

ASDA Veggie mixes

Found a new range of ASDA veggie mixes the other day, pretty sure it is a new line.

Its basically just dry packets which you can make stuff from, like sausages and chilli. Both the sausage and chilli mix I got were vegan and they cost something like 87p.

Made the chilli the other day and it was enough for a big part of 2 main meals, the sausage mix is meant to make 6 so looking forward to making those!

Vegan American Thanksgiving in London

Hi!

I'm making a vegan Thanskgiving feast for some friends while I'm studying abroad in London, and I've come up with a bit of a problem. Two problems, actually. The few Americans that will be here as well are used to yams topped with marshmallows. I'm fine with them without, but I would also love to show them how yams can be delicious without marshmallows. So, I need either a fantastic yam Thanksgiving recipe without marshmallows, or a decent marshmallow one (with marshmallows that can be found in London).

Two, spaghetti squash in London? Does is exist? Everything else I can basically find (once I find agar agar), but no one has ever heard of spaghetti squash out here. Help?
